October 2017 happenings Most will agree, the best shift in seasons is from summer to fall, especially after this year’s hot spell. October in downtown Paso is all about History, Honey Halloween. Where else can you watch one of our country’s greatest parades, attend a festival devoted to bees and their honey, and Trick or Treat downtown! On Oct. 14, the 87th annual Pioneer Day brings the community downtown for the parade, reminiscent of 1931 when it began. Celebrate the 87th!!! When the iconic Conestoga Wagon appears on the corner of 10th and Spring streets, the days seem to roll by a little quicker. For the Board of Directors, committee and volunteers, it represents a year of work in barns, garages and fields, online and in conference rooms, to produce an incredible parade and activities to honor our Pioneer heritage. This parade is THE best display of antique tractors and wagons, harvesters, vintage buggies, and rare farm equipment in our beloved country; a tribute to the hard-working farmers, ranchers and their families who worked through the Depression....

2017 Pioneer Day Belle Riley Rae Coelho

Congratulations to our 2017 Belle Riley and her attendants Our Belle is Riley Rae Coelho from the Adelaida. Riley’s maternal great-great-grandfather Otto Wyss immigrated to the United States from Zurich, Switzerland in 1873; settling in Adelaida in 1876; working as an engineer, machinist and map maker at the Klau Mine quicksilver mines. He homesteaded in 1878. His daughter Pauline Johanna Wyss, Riley’s great-great-grandmother, was born in 1892 in Adelaida, and served on the first county fair board from 1942 to 1960. Riley’s paternal great-great-grandfather, James Wesley Dodd, came by wagon train from Kentucky to California; settling in Pleyto-Hesperia. His...

Pioneer Day Queen: Ellen Mae Hansen Schroeder

Shandon is a little town about 18 miles east of Paso Robles. The population hasn’t grown much the last few years — approximately 1,365 residents, give or take a few. It’s a small close-knit community of folks who have lived there most of their lives.  Our Queen for the 87th Annual Pioneer Day is Ellen Mae Hansen Schroeder. Alex Martin returns to compete

The three-time winner battles local chefs Adam White and Clare Cranford for title of TOP CHEF The sixth annual Wellness Kitchen Top Chef Competition and Fundraiser returns to the Idler’s Home demonstration kitchen in Paso Robles on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 5 to 9 p.m. after the past 2 years at the Estrella Warbirds Museum. Chef Alex Martin is back to defend his 3-time title against 2-time winner Adam White, and newcomer Clare Cranford. Alex Martin, owner/chef of Crush Catering, won the first three Top Chef events, and recently opened his commercial kitchen in Atascadero. Consistent with the commitment of Founder and Executive Director Nancy Walker to educate teens in culinary skills, three “teen sous chefs” will be assisting each competing chef. The panel of judges include Lori Foster, owner of Spice of Life, Mike Lane, COO at Twin Cities Community Hospital and local businessman Kevin Kuhn. The fourth judge will be the lucky winner of a raffle! Chef Philip Riccomini is the Master of Ceremonies; quite fitting since Chef Philip recently retired from the Culinary Arts Academy and taught two of the competing chefs in high school.
